About this template

The Classic Monastic template is a letter on a single column with extra-wide margins, a small drop cap on the first paragraph and a Sabon body. Headers in tracked caps, a thin rule the only ornament — the discipline of a manuscript page reproduced for correspondence. Compatible with ATS systems at religious publishers and heritage libraries (Workday, NeoGov for the public cultural sector at the Library of Congress, the Bodleian, the Vatican Library).

Who is it for?

It suits candidates writing to abbeys, religious institutions (dioceses, congregations, contemplative orders), contemplative publishers (Liturgical Press, Paulist Press, Templegate), theology departments (Duke Divinity, Princeton Theological Seminary, Tübingen, the Pontifical Gregorian University), monastic-tradition foundations and rare-book or manuscript libraries (the Beinecke, the Houghton, the Wren Library). The register fits the addressee — clearly out of place in commercial, corporate or fast-paced consumer contexts.

How to use it

4 cm side margins give the visual breath expected by the register. The first-paragraph drop cap in Sabon Display 36 pt is used once, in paragraph 1 only. The body in Sabon 11 pt with 1.3 line spacing. For a manuscript-library curator application (Vatican Library, Bodleian Special Collections, Trinity College Dublin's Long Room), mention the corpora worked and palaeographic competence (Carolingian minuscule, insular hand, Greek manuscript hands). Avoid any explicit religious symbol in the header — the typographic register speaks for itself.

Frequently asked questions

Is it suitable for applications outside religious settings?

Only for manuscript libraries and institutions tied to the manuscript tradition (the Beinecke at Yale, the Houghton at Harvard, the British Library Asian and African Studies, Trinity College Dublin Manuscripts). For purely secular academic positions, use letter-classic-academic. The monastic register is too marked for the standard scholarly format.

How do I address a letter to an abbot or bishop?

To an abbot: "Right Reverend Father Abbot" in salutation, "With reverent regards in Christ" in closing. To a bishop: "Your Excellency" or "Most Reverend" depending on the relationship. Check the proper usage for the order or diocese — conventions vary between Benedictines, Dominicans, Cistercians and the diocesan clergy. The Catholic Encyclopedia and Anglican Directories provide reliable guidance.

Is it appropriate for a theology research role?

Use letter-classic-academic instead, which is more neutral. The Monastic template suits editorial or librarian engagements within religious institutions, less so an academic career in theology where the standard academic format prevails for journals and tenure-track committees.
