About this template
The Classic Modified Block template is a cover letter in the modified-block business format — date and signature block aligned right, body and salutation aligned left, paragraphs separated by a blank line. Times body, single horizontal rule beneath the header. The conservative middle ground of US business correspondence. Compatible with US and Canadian ATS systems (Workday, iCIMS, SuccessFactors, Greenhouse, Lever, ADP).
Who is it for?
It suits candidates targeting the US and Canadian job market — applying to corporates, regional banks, accountancy firms and professional services that expect a familiar but less rigid format than full-block. Less common in continental Europe where AIDA or full-block dominate; out of place in pure-tech startup contexts. Particularly fit for US subsidiaries of international groups, regional law firms and mid-market accountancy.
How to use it
The date is right-aligned, on the same line as or just above the closing signature block. The recipient block remains left-aligned, in block format. The body is left-justified, paragraphs separated by a blank line. For a US application, adapt the salutation ("Dear Hiring Manager," if recipient unknown, "Dear Mr Smith," if known) and the closing ("Sincerely," followed by typed signature). State your US work status (citizen, permanent resident, H-1B visa, OPT, TN — for Canadians and Mexicans). The signature line includes city and state for US correspondence.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between modified-block and full-block?
Full-block: everything left-aligned. Modified-block: date and signature right-aligned, rest left. Modified-block is visually more relaxed, full-block more strict. In 2026, modified-block dominates US professional services; full-block remains majority in banking and insurance. Either is correct for most professional applications.
Should I attach references to a US application?
No, not in the letter itself — US convention is "References available upon request" at the foot. Prepare three references (one direct manager, one client or peer, one indirect senior) with contact details and availability windows, to be shared only after the final interview round.
How do I format the US recipient address?
US convention: Name, Title on one line. Company on the next line. Street number and street on the third. City, state abbreviation, ZIP on the last ("Boston, MA 02101"). Phone and email optional in the recipient block (they will appear in the footer or signature). Avoid the European convention of country at the end unless writing across borders.
