About this template
The Old Money template is a senior letter that reads as inherited rather than printed: Caslon throughout, off-cream paper with deckle-edge effect, navy ink, no logo, no colour accent. The deliberate sobriety signals that the sender's name is the only title needed. Compatible with the ATS systems of multigenerational family offices (Workday at Rockefeller Capital Management, Bessemer Trust, Brown Brothers Harriman, Edmond de Rothschild Heritage).
Who is it for?
It suits senior executives applying to multigenerational family offices, dynastic-business boards, philanthropic-trust mandates and old-money private-club committees (White's, Brooks's, The Travellers Club, The Garrick Club, The Knickerbocker). Heirs, family-business directors, foundation presidents and senior trustees who can do without visual signals. Out of place for first-generation founders or contexts where the recipient won't recognise the family name.
How to use it
The name stays sober, no middle initials unless established by family usage. The hook opens with a full courtesy formula ("Dear Mr Chairman", "Madam President") and never directly mentions the role — the recipient knows why you are writing. Paragraph 2 cites your current mandates in maximum shorthand ("trustee of three family foundations for twenty years"). Avoid figures entirely — the effect rests on suggestion, not demonstration. A handwritten signature in navy ink, scanned at 600 dpi.
Frequently asked questions
Does the letter work without a recognised family name?
No — it is the only register that requires pre-existing nominal capital. If your name isn't recognised by the recipient before the envelope opens, the effect tips into pretension. For first-generation founders, choose letter-exec-monogram, which builds personal brand from initials.
Should I print the letter on deckle-edge paper?
For hand delivery at a final interview, yes — cream stock 140 gsm G.F. Smith Colorplan, deckle-edge torn on two sides. For an email PDF, the digital render reproduces the effect on screen; for printing, the PDF version accepts standard cream-laid stock.
Is it suitable for a private-club committee?
Yes for sponsored applications (the candidate must be proposed by two active members). The letter is not a spontaneous application — it confirms a proposal already in motion. The old-money register is explicitly aligned with the codes of traditional London, New York and Paris clubs.
