About this template
The Midnight Blue template is a serif cover letter in Lora with a deep midnight-blue header band and a soft cream body. Subtle starlit speckle texture in the band — the visual register of a planetarium programme rather than a corporate memo. Compatible with ATS at observatories and science museums (Workday at the American Museum of Natural History, the California Academy of Sciences, the Adler Planetarium; in-house portals at NASA, ESA, the IAU and major observatories).
Who is it for?
It suits candidates in astronomy outreach, observatory roles (Kitt Peak, Mauna Kea, Cerro Tololo, La Palma, the VLT), science museums, navigation industries and night-shift logistics. Astronomers, science communicators, port masters, planetarium directors who want a letter that signals the depth and patience of their work. Unsuited to traditional daytime corporate applications.
How to use it
The starlit texture in the band stays subtle — no more than 5-8 small white points visible. For an observatory or NASA application, mention training (PhD astrophysics, postdoctoral research), instruments mastered (VLT, ALMA, HARPS, JWST, the LSST/Vera Rubin Observatory), and signature publications with their journal (ApJ, MNRAS, A&A, Nature Astronomy). For outreach, cite the media (Sky & Telescope, Astronomy, BBC Sky at Night) and podcasts/channels that have broadcast your interventions. Include ORCID and ADS identifier in the signature.
Frequently asked questions
Does the starlit texture pass ATS?
Yes — it is an image layer that does not alter text extraction. Workday and SuccessFactors parse the PDF normally. For very old portals (Lawson, older versions of PeopleSoft), send in parallel a clean Word version without texture as a fallback.
Is it suitable for merchant marine or night-shift logistics applications?
Yes for port captains, logistics leads at night-shift hub operations (FedEx, UPS, DHL Air, major airports' cargo divisions) and 24/7 logistics team leads. The night/depth register works in these contexts. For merchant navy proper, prefer letter-royal-navy which carries a more military-maritime register.
Should I attach a research portfolio?
For astronomers applying for research positions, attach the publication list as an annex (PMID/ADS) and a separate 5-10 page research statement. For outreach, attach 2-3 signature articles in PDF and a link to podcasts/conferences available online. The letter itself stays one to two pages.
