About this template
The Charcoal Minimal template is a minimal cover letter with a deep charcoal-grey accent — header rule, signature line and section bullets all in the same dark neutral. Pure off-white background, restrained sans-serif — quiet authority without colour. Compatible with the ATS systems of architecture and design firms (Workday at AECOM, Foster + Partners, Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Skidmore Owings & Merrill) and senior-consulting boutiques (Workday at McKinsey Design, IDEO, Bain).
Who is it for?
It suits senior candidates who want gravity without typographic ornament: architects, creative directors, museum curators, senior consultants, COOs (chief operating officers) and independent-agency principals. The dark neutral signals competence and a refusal of empty marketing. Out of place in junior applications without yet the authority capital to carry this restraint, and in youth or consumer-facing brands.
How to use it
Charcoal grey (Pantone Cool Gray 11 or hex #36454F) stays on three elements only: header rule, section bullets, signature line. The hook avoids superlatives and enters the subject by quantified reference: "As creative director of agency X for 12 years...". Paragraph 2 cites your signature projects in shorthand ("Renault identity refresh 2018, AccorHotels brand repositioning 2020"). A handwritten signature in black ink, scanned at 600 dpi, occupies the right half of the signature line — no paraph.
Frequently asked questions
Is it suitable for independent creative agencies?
Yes for senior-creative boutiques (Wieden+Kennedy, Pentagram, Sagmeister & Walsh, Mother London, 72andSunny). The charcoal register is explicitly aligned with premium-agency codes that reject aggressive visual marketing in favour of restraint.
Should I attach a portfolio to this letter?
Yes for creative profiles (architect, designer, art director). Mention the portfolio URL in the signature block and specify whether access is password-protected (NDA-bound projects). For consulting profiles (COO, consultant), an executive CV is enough.
Is the letter suitable for COO roles?
Yes for B2B scale-up COOs, creative-agency COOs and consulting-firm COOs — which appreciate the charcoal register. For COOs of large corporates (S&P 500, FTSE 100), choose letter-exec-house, which adds the insider corporate code.
