How to use it
The personal seal stays discreet — candidate initials in a 1.5 cm vignette. The double rule under the firm name (1 pt + 0.5 pt 1 mm apart) signs the tier-one register. For an M&A application, state significant deals by scope and jurisdiction without naming parties ("Cross-border acquisition $1.4bn in renewables, regulatory due diligence US-Germany"). Specify the bar (New York Bar, England & Wales Solicitor, California Bar, ABA membership, IBA membership) and working languages. The signature line includes Bar number and the year of admission.
Frequently asked questions
Should I mention my signature deals?
Yes in paragraph 2 or 3, but in generic form. "Coordinated legal workstream on an $800M IPO on NYSE in 2024" without naming the issuer. If the deal has been published by the firm (mandate published, deal published), you may name parties — check the firm's official communications before any submission.
How much experience to apply directly for partner?
10-12 years for magic-circle and white-shoe; 8-10 years for full-service and boutiques. With a track record of client origination (portable book of business), 7 years can suffice for equity partnership at some boutiques. The letter must explicitly mention the book and its economics (revenue generated, retention rates, key relationships).
Is it suitable for an in-house General Counsel application?
More for the first interview at a firm. For an in-house application at a large corporate (FTSE 100, Fortune 500), prefer letter-prof-c-suite which carries the C-level register. The Exec Law Firm template is more coded for firm-to-firm moves or firm-to-firm returns from secondment.
