About this template
The ATS Compact template is a cover letter with tightened margins and reduced line height to fit a denser message on a single page. Same neutral sans-serif and parser-friendly structure as the standard version — only the spacing changes, the keyword density rises. Designed for senior profiles who need to mention multiple roles, achievements and certifications in a letter that still parses cleanly through Workday, Taleo and the HR portals of large US and UK groups.
Who is it for?
It suits senior candidates who need every line for content: directors and executives with ten or more years of experience, MBB consultants transitioning into industry corporate roles, principal engineers and architects with a dense project portfolio. Particularly suited to C-suite and EVP applications where the unwritten rule is one page but the pitch demands three or four quantified achievements. It also fits US Fortune 1000 mid-caps and UK FTSE 250 corporates where the culture of short-but-dense correspondence remains strong.
How to use it
Maximise density without sacrificing readability: three paragraphs of five to six lines, with one quantified fact anchored per paragraph ('EBITDA +18% over two years', '45-person team across three European sites', '$12M project budget delivered at -3% to plan'). Avoid bullet lists — they aerate the layout and cancel the compact effect. For consulting applications (McKinsey, BCG, Bain, Oliver Wyman), the density of strategy keywords (transformation, performance, optimisation, restructuring) should feel deliberate but natural. Export to PDF to freeze the layout: compact spacing shifts more than standard if Word re-flows. The 'one-page executive cover letter' search rewards this template.
Frequently asked questions
Is the compact format seen as too dense?
For junior and mid-career applications, yes — the recruiter may read it as cluttered. For C-suite and senior director profiles, it is on the contrary a signal of pragmatism: the candidate knows the recipient's time is scarce. Quick rule: if you have less than eight years of experience, use the ATS Clean or ATS Spacious template instead.
Which numbers belong in a senior letter?
Three metrics maximum, each anchored to a specific role: one growth figure (EBITDA, revenue, market share), one team figure (headcount managed, geographic scope, budget) and one transformation figure (cost reduction, time-to-market, adoption rate). Avoid vanity metrics (LinkedIn followers, undergraduate honours) — a senior recruiter does not value them.
Should I attach an annex to complement a compact letter?
For C-suite applications, yes: a separate one-page track record listing six to eight signature achievements with short context, key numbers and lessons learned. This document travels alongside the letter and CV in the combined PDF sent to the search firm. For senior-manager applications, the compact letter alone is enough — the two-page CV takes over from there.
