About this template
The ATS Clean template is a cover letter built with the leanest possible structure: neutral sans-serif, simple contact header, subject line, three paragraphs, sign-off, signature. No accent colour, no decorative rule, no boxes — pure plain text that every Workday, Taleo, SmartRecruiters, iCIMS and Greenhouse parser reads without extraction errors. Parsing reliability is the absolute priority; visual identity is deliberately absent.
Who is it for?
It suits candidates whose priority is parser reliability over visual identity: mass applications on job boards (Indeed, LinkedIn Easy Apply, Monster, ZipRecruiter), recruitment-firm screening pipelines, high-volume markets where dozens of files are processed per day. Suited to entry-level (internships, graduate schemes), mid-career profiles (project officers, account managers, technicians) and any context where the recruiter only needs the words — not a visual manifesto. Particularly relevant in operations, logistics, construction, retail, BPO and shared services.
How to use it
Keep paragraphs short (three to five lines maximum) and implicitly numbered by function: opening (the role, the source of the ad), body (the two or three CV elements that match the brief), motivation (why this specific employer). Avoid figures of speech and literary references — the parser does not recognise them, the time-pressed recruiter does not either. For applications via Indeed or LinkedIn Easy Apply, export to unprotected PDF and upload without renaming the file (some pipelines index the filename). For spontaneous email applications, this template signals to the manager that you respect their time. 'Plain cover letter ATS-safe' is the search where this one wins.
Frequently asked questions
Do recruiters find this template too neutral?
Human recruiters reading the letter in full can find it dry. But 60 to 80% of applications on major US and UK boards pass through an automated screen before a human ever opens the PDF. The ATS Clean template optimises that first step. For a spontaneous application sent directly to the hiring manager (not through a portal), prefer a template with a touch of visual identity — ATS Rule Line or ATS Headline.
Should I mention where I saw the ad in the letter?
Yes, in the first line of the first paragraph: 'Following your posting on LinkedIn on 12 May 2026 for the Junior Account Manager role...'. ATS systems sometimes extract this information to weight applications by acquisition channel, and the human recruiter uses it to measure channel efficiency. Indicating the source also signals that you actually read the ad rather than mass-blasting CVs.
How many words for a clean ATS cover letter?
250 to 350 words in the body, no more. Parsers do not score length, but the human recruiter who opens behind has fifteen seconds per letter. Three tight paragraphs covering the essentials beat a dense page. If you have more to say, save it for the interview — the letter is a key, not an autobiography.
