About this template
The Germany Compact template is a compact German Lebenslauf in Times New Roman, brought down to a single A4 thanks to a tight three-column tabular grid (date / position / employer). The photo is reduced to passport size in the header. Reserved for junior candidates required to meet a strict short-format requirement.
Who is it for?
It fits early-career German candidates — Berufseinsteiger, Auszubildende, Werkstudenten and new graduates — applying to a Praktikum, a Trainee program or a first role where the recruiter still expects the German tabular format but where the experience block is short. Relevant for Traineeship programs at banks (Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank), industrial groups (Siemens, Bosch) and consulting firms (Roland Berger, McKinsey Frankfurt).
How to use it
The three-column grid condenses each line: « 09/2023–08/2024 | Werkstudent Controlling | BMW AG, Munich ». Passport photo upper right (size 3.5 × 4.5 cm), compact civil status block (date and place of birth, nationality). Reverse chronology on Berufserfahrung and Ausbildung. Internships, work-study and Werkstudenten are treated at the same level as full-time employment. For a new graduate, indicate the Numerus Clausus admission and final grade (Abschlussnote) if above 2.0 on the German scale.
Frequently asked questions
How to convert non-German grades on the German scale?
The German scale runs from 1.0 (sehr gut) to 5.0 (insufficient). Rough conversion: US GPA 4.0 → 1.0; 3.7 → 1.3-1.7; 3.5 → 2.0; 3.0 → 2.7-3.0. UK First → 1.0-1.3; UK 2:1 → 2.0-2.3; UK 2:2 → 2.7-3.0. Indicate both notations to clarify: « Final grade 3.7/4.0 (equivalent ~1.3 on German scale) ».
Should I anglicise or germanise job titles?
Germanise when equivalence is clear: « Internship » becomes « Praktikum », « Work-study » becomes « Werkstudent » or « Duales Studium ». Keep in English titles without direct equivalent (« Gap year » becomes « Auslandsjahr » or kept in English with explanatory parenthesis).
Is one page enough for a Trainee program?
Yes for Trainee Programs (Siemens, BMW, Deutsche Bank) targeting new graduates — the majority of applications arrive on one page. If the academic path includes a PhD, a long international exchange and multiple internships, two pages remain accepted. Prefer then Germany standard.
